Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ): Special immigrant juvenile status protects children who are under 21 years of age, unmarried and have been abused, abandoned or neglected by a parent. Child must be declared depended on juvenile court and reunification with one or both child’s parents must no longer be a viable option. After the SIJ classification granted, child may apply for permanent residency in
the United States (Green Card).
General Requirements:
- Must be under 21 year of age at the time of filing SIJ petition with the USCIS
- Must be unmarried
- Must be declared dependent upon a juvenile court
- Reunification with one or both parents must no longer be a viable option due to neglect, abuse
or abandonment - It is not in the best interest of the child to return to his or her native country
